With their innovative new maglev (magnetic levitation) train, China is once again pushing the limits of high-speed rail! 🚄 With ambitious goals to eventually run at 800 km/h (almost 500 mph), Chinese engineers recently showed a prototype that supposedly reached an incredible 650 km/h (400 mph)! If such infrastructure were available, picture being able to travel two hours to connect far-flung cities like New York and Chicago. When the train reaches a sufficient speed, it smoothly lifts off the track, hovering less than half an inch above, after starting on rubber wheels. This project, which was unveiled during a Beijing high-speed rail congress, is anticipated to be finished by the end of the year. China has established itself as a global leader in high-speed rail construction by operating the fastest commercial maglev in the world, the Shanghai-Hangzhou line, at 431 km/h (265 mph).
With the help of strong magnets, this amazing technology lifts the train above the rails, enabling it to travel at extremely high speeds with unmatched efficiency.
