Who is the ChatGPT Co-Creator hired as Chief Scientist of Meta's Superintelligence Labs?
Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI researcher, has been appointed chief scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zhao has years of expertise with reasoning models, synthetic data, and large-scale AI training. He co-developed GPT-4, o1, and ChatGPT.
Together with Alexandr Wang, Zhao will handle research at Meta Superintelligence Labs and answer directly to Zuckerberg. Yann LeCun, who focuses on long-term, next-generation AI research, is still the lead AI scientist at FAIR.
Mark Zuckerberg has been spending a lot of money all summer on an intelligence unit, and Zhao's appointment feels like the last bow. The experiment of creating a frontier AI lab from scratch appears to be officially ready for takeoff, now that it has researchers from all the best labs and access to Meta's billions of dollars in infrastructure.
